Default Windows XP installation can’t detect SATA Hardisk when you want to install Windows XP. Here is straight forward guide to make custom Windows XP installation disc that can detect your Hardisk thus installing this operating system!
If you have an USB Floopy Drive, this guide is basically useless. Just load SATA driver into a diskette, press F6 during XP installation when it shows “Press F6 if you need to load additional drivers” and carry on with no other problem.
What you need to get started
- A Windows XP installation disc
- A blank CDR and a burner of course!
- nLite (Download here)
- .NET Framework 2.0 x86 (22 MB)
or .NET Framework 2.0 x64 (45 MB) for 64 bits OS (Eg. Vista 64bits) - SATA Driver for Aspire 4310, 4710
UPDATE 7 August 2008 : This is the link where you can find all Aspire 4710 drivers!
Step1: Install .Net Framework 2.0
Step2: Install nLite
Step3: Insert your XP Installation disc, run nLite, follow on screen instruction.
Click “next”…
Locate your XP disc, let it read…. click “next”
Check “drivers”… click “next”…
Click “insert”… choose “single driver”…
Locate the driver we have downloaded earlier on… select “iaahci.inf”..click “open”…
Select “Intel 82801GM SATA RAID CONTROLLER (MOBILE ICH7MR/DH)” and click “OK”… proceed on with the rest of the steps and burn them into a blank CDR
Step4: You are ready to install XP with no trouble detecting hardisk! Yahoooo….
Part 2 coming soon on guiding you to install all device drivers properly!

i’d like to point out the fact that i had to change the settings in the bios for SATA MODE from AHCI to IDE, cause otherwise it wouldnt detect the HD anyway

yup, and thats what this article serve, to load AHCI driver into XP installation disc so that your HDD can be detected later on. You may use IDE mode but you will lose some capabilities later on. cheers~

hi. i choose “Intel 82801GM SATA RAID CONTROLLER (MOBILE ICH7MR/DH)” not work for me. only SATA AHCI are work for me. most acer aspire use SATA AHCI not SATA RAID.
im having trouble in installing XP on aspire 4310, i dont have fdd usb so i used nlite.. have a doubt, use AHCI driver or RAID..
please use AHCI. if you have followed the procedures, AHCI driver has been loaded into your windows XP installation disc, thus u can now proceed using AHCI mode in BIOS

shah: Is your Windows installation disc working properly previously? I think maybe it’s your disc problem. Do you encounter any problem during installation? Or maybe, do you experience any hardware issue before this?

there answer for your question is NO..
(which is i dunwan!)
here what i did,
at first i was trying to format the disk.. and the ‘not-detected-h/d’ error appeared,
then i tried switch the sata mode to ide.. it works! i done installing windows.. but then
i have this ‘missing-missing files thingy’ error. So i decided to reformat the h/d again.Thank God i found ur blog, i dun have usb floppy, so i followed the n-lite steps.. i did all the steps, it detected h/d and i’ve done format the h/d smoothly. but…. it restarting and restarting, restarting and restarting (when it load windows)
I did ask a few friends regarding my prob, what i got is
- the sata driver is not compatible
- i shud just installing vista
For ur info, im using/installing windows xp SP3 build SP2 by amit
If im having a hardware problem, i wont be able to install windows on ide mode isnt it?
About the not working disc, it work jz perfect on my desktop pc..
one more thing, the link to download the sata drivers. its not working(maybe they’ve closed the link), i’ve tried to googling the drivers and most of the result is pointing to that sites.. i did found a sata driver on this one sites.. but still i have the same problem.
*i’ve burned 9 cd’s just for this &*%&(&&^%$ problem
waiting for your reply bro.

shah: maybe you want to try using other windows installation disc like SP2.
‘missing-missing files thingy’ error.
care to explain more about this? maybe this explains your windows installation may have not gone well as well when you got this kind of errors.
the sata driver is not compatible
if you want not sure if your AHCI driver is working well, then try this from dell.
If im having a hardware problem, i wont be able to install windows on ide mode isnt it?
i have no answer for this. by right, you can still run windows fine without AHCI mode.
sorry to hear about your laptop. good luck~! keep trying, you will make it
