小强 (siu keong), a name made famous by a Hong Kong star in a series ages ago. It’s used as frequent as its actual name, cockroach. And I just got another name for this little cute creature today! MotoKeong!
According to Wikipedia, there are about 4,000 species of cockroach of which 30 species are associated with human habitations and about four species are well known as pests.
With its simple and small cell regeneration over time, cockroach can survive long in radioactive affected area. Quote from Wikipedia :
The cockroach’s ability to withstand radiation better than human beings can be explained in terms of the cell cycle. Cells are most vulnerable to the effects of radiation when they are dividing. A cockroach’s cells divide only once each time it molts, which is weekly at most in a juvenile roach.
A cockroach can survive complete decapitation for up to several weeks before dying of starvation or dehydration. Cockroaches are among the hardiest insects on the planet, some species capable of remaining active for a month without food, or being able to survive on limited resources
This simple organism might have probably existed way before human in this planet. And furthermore, this is what I found in Wikipedia as well!
It is popularly suggested that cockroaches will “inherit the earth” if humanity destroys itself in a nuclear war. Cockroaches do indeed have a much higher radiation resistance than vertebrates, with the lethal dose perhaps 6 to 15 times that for humans.
And something interesting after a simple Google search on “小強”
Hmmm, okok, get back to the topic title, I found some cockroaches in the canteen yesterday. And I freaked out that I didn’t take any food from that section of canteen. I complained to one of the canteen staff. Unsurprisingly, I still seeing these lovely siu-keong jogging around the place today. I made another complaint to the canteen boss this time. So, let’s see how things go over here.
I have had some mussels from the canteen before and on the very own night that day, I frequented the toilet more than I usually do in a month. :| That was my first and last time taking mussels in the canteen. I will not fxxkin take any seafood from this canteen anymore!
