Problem Installing Need For Speed Shift

I just want to post up a quick solution for those having problem installing their copy of games acquired from EA (Electronic Arts) particularly on the latest episode of Need For Speed, Shift.

If you are hitting error that says ” Cannot install to the selected directory because the path contains the following characters: \\/:*?”"<>|; ” or not having the actual game name printed on the setup window title, read on.

Uninstall your copy of PhysX and get the latest version installed later on.
Install the latest version of ATI Catalyst if you are running on ATI chips.
Remove Microsoft Applocale if you are using one. (In many cases, you probably would have one installed)
Remember to restart or else you will find yourself in no luck after attempting all steps said above.
Good luck! I got mine working by following these steps.

Cannot read Chinese words in games/programs

The problem: I need to surf to a website that is in Traditional Chinese and when I open it. Hoola~

The reason: Computer is not set to read non-Unicode language like Traditional Chinese. You can view yours at Control Panel > Regional and Language Options > Advance > Language for non-Unicode Programs

The solution: There are number of solutions in actual facts but let’s stick to 2 simple ones.

You may change the language you desire right on that setting page BUT doing so may jeopadize the stability of other programs that are not running on the language that you are going to apply.
Better way, install Microsoft Applocale Utility. (Hint: You need to validate your Windows to download the app, if you are having trouble doing so, you may just Google (okay, of you can Bing for it too now) for other download link without going through any validation).

I’m going to talk about Applocale. It’s a free piece of software released by Microsoft for free. It’s intention is to make problematic programs to run temporary. But nevertheless, we can make use of this program to make our lives simply, easier.

Just install it, choose the program that you intend to run and of course the language you want it to run on, and that’s it basically. It is really that simple. And going back to the same page again we will now see…

Picasa 3 as a Windows picture viewer replacement

I have never been a big fan of Google Picasa software. I tried Picasa during the early days when Google first released this little piece of software back in 2004.But I didn’t get hooked up by it unfortunately as I’m much more comfortable with the image management software provided by my camera’s manufacturer. Today, I give it a try on the new version available for download today, version 3.1.

I’m not too sure what have changed till then but certainly I will keep a copy in my computer for quite long this time. It’s the Windows Picture Viewer replacement feature that Picasa provides really appeals me, very useful!

I’m going to talk specifically about this part for now.

With this Picasa picture viewer, we can navigate across images in a folder easily through the image thumbnails (no space wasted, it won’t leave any thumbnail caching files behind like Windows’s) generated at the bottom of the window.

Of course, we can also zoom in and out easily like how we can with Windows Picture viewer. In addition! We can drag and move the image around just in case we want to look closer on a particular part of the picture.

All these can be done in a breeze with few mouse wheel roll and a few mouse clicks minus the painful experience of using the scrollbars to move the image around.

Coppermine Theme based on WordPress’s Brightness

Remember that I launched a face-lift to my Coppermine gallery last November? Now I’m proud to release this theme to the public for FREE.

This is my first thing getting my hand on Coppermine themes seriously. So, you gotta do something in order to get the theme works for you.

Take note that this theme is totally independent and it has absolutely nothing to do with your WordPress Brightness theme whatsoever. Changes made here and there won’t influence each other as well.

How to use? Download the theme, and open up theme.html and start looking for YOURDOMAIN. You will need to replace it with your own website domain, of course!

And for the top bar links, you will need to manage/edit them manually as well. Open up theme.html and you will know where to start looking.

New Photo Album

As what our parents have been telling us, as what the people always sing in Chinese New Year songs, new year must wear new clothes, wear new hat, and then horrr, we must change new photo gallery also! Lame.

HugoLim's Photo Album (based on Zenphoto)

My new photo album is based on ZenPhoto. What drives me off Coppermine’s camp to Zenphoto’s? The main reason would be the dynamic image processing mechanism and folder-based albums structure. It saves hell lots of headache and time managing the album.

And at the time being I’m using StopDesign theme for my new photo album and tweaked abit here and there to improve usability. Head on there and have a look, now!

Yes, you got it right! Absolutely FREE. Nothing hidden and no prawn behind the rock (ada udang disebalik batu)!

I was trying to get something real fast and quick in converting a piece of DVD music video into mp3 files to be played back on my ipod. As usual, google would return me countless of links that link to numerous of good, shareware, unfortunately. Then I came upon a great forum and found a good lead to a software called, BeSweet.

There is a plugin needed in order to decode .vob properly and a GUI interface is needed to ease my life so I have compiled them altogether to ease your life too. :D (Credit to Aubrey at http://www.moviecodec.com/topics/1147p1.html for giving such a fantastic headstart!)

It is completely free and supported by the developer’s forum at http://forum.doom9.org/

I was using hardwired theme that comes along by default when I first installed Coppermine gallery for years till today. I find it dull and not too attractive compared to many other themes available online.

Then, at one bright sunny day when the warm sunshine is…… {lame crap}, so, while I was blog hopping around… I landed at photos.dwaynefoong.com. I got this link from Jing-leBelle’s blog.

I have then been thinking for daysss (1 night only lah actually) on how to make my template more attractive and better. So so so…… I was thinking with one objective in mind.

That is… to design a new template that will integrate with my current wordpress theme, Brightness.

I started to find an theme in my Coppermine gallery that resembles most with the wordpress theme. Theme reynolds has a sidebar and that’s one theme good to start with!

After 30 minutes or so, I managed to integrate the CSS file of both wordpress theme and the existing coppermine theme. Here’s how it look like now…

Then… 2 hours or so later trying this and that… things begins to take shape! :D

Tada~~~ I went to Kerachut again for the second time this year. This time, I went with my colleagues from Motolala.

SJLee, Adrian, Ricky, Hugo and Choon Yi and…

Joyce from Motolala also. Nice to meet you for the first time.

I couldn’t catch my breath and got muscle cramp on the way back and It was worse than last time. I think I need to exercise more given my limited little stamina in my body. On the way back Joyce and ChoonYi were the two that are leading the pack and pulled away at steady rate. By the time I reached I can see them practicing dancing. Just imagine how slow I was. Ahahha.. man… I’m weak

Had a great time hiking and sweating. That’s the spirit! Let’s do it again some time in the future! :D

iTunes Duplicate file remover

It started when I transferred Wendy’s Ipod’s content into her existing iTunes library. Duplicate files created all over the iTunes’s music folder and it’s a total mess.

New version of Apple iTunes nowadays can find duplicate files in your library but they are not doing good enough to eliminate those duplicate files found. You need to select one by one alternately in order to remove them from the library.

Searching in the Internet for such remedy is painful. It’s either helping me to find those files or deleting them permanently from the computer without user’s acknowledgment which is pretty risky. Therefore, I have written this small piece of vbscript program to do the magic.

A very simple straight-forward that does the job with just a few questions asked.

Main Features:

Remove duplicate files created by iTunes.
Option to backup duplicate files found into another folder.
Option to remove smaller duplicate files keeping biggest identical file to preserve song quality.

Yes, this is the main purpose, removing duplicate files!

Option to backup duplicate files found into another folder.

Once duplicate files are found, you can choose whether to backup them to somewhere else first. You can review them again before deleting them permanently.

Option to remove smaller duplicate files keeping biggest identical file to preserve song quality.

For instance, if there are 3 identical songs found, the file that has the biggest size will be kept! Now we can be more sure about keeping the right one!

How to run?

Download the file, un-zip it, and run the file inside.

Step1: Select your library path

Step2: Yes if you want to keep biggest identical song found.

Step3: Yes if you want to backup removed files.

Step4: OKif you are sure of all settings. And let the program does the rest.

Documentation/Note:

After you have finished running the program, delete your iTunes content and add them back again. This would ensures that you have removed missing files effectively.
Remember, this software works only with music folder organized by its artists and albums. (Open iTunes, click Edit, then click “Preferences.” Click on the Advanced tab, then make sure that the box next to “Keep iTunes Music Folder organized” is checked)
