It was a sunny cooling Saturday morning when Wai Seng had decided to ‘fly another kite’ for this outing that we planned days ago just a night before the actual day. I would definitely not want to blame him for not being able to make it letting down his girl friend in particular due to the fact that he needed to watch a World Cup match the night before the outing and very concerned that he might not be able to wake up early to make it to the outing. How thoughtful he is!

I can’t tell you how much I adore my friend here for being able to keep up such a good reputation record after so many years! Bravo! For this, I would like to dedicate this post to my beloved friend, Wai Seng, who is now working very hard trying to find more customers for his bank he works for currently!

Here we go. A parrot that greets us and shouts “Wai Seng, Wai Seng where are you!” when we entered the park.

The entrance fees for Malaysian is RM 20. Oh ya! If you happen have a Metrojaya or Jaya Jusco or Real Rewards card like what Wai Seng always bring along, you can get a RM10 discount. But remember, each card entitles for one ticket only. So, you better know the trick!

This is one proud bird just like Wai Seng. Standing tall and always hold firm to the decision he makes. When he says “Yes”, he really mean it! You can always count on him!

Parrot, parrot and parrots. You can find lots of them in the World of Parrots section of the park. The park itself is quite big and for those like us and like Wai Seng that often carry a camera around snapping photos, you would probably need to spend about 3 hours in the park. So, it’s better to get up early, not to get addicted to watching World Cup match and staying up late and get to the park as early as you can.

All the photos with bird(s) are taken with a Canon 400D with Canon EF 70-200mm f/2.8L USM most of the time. The rest are probably with either a Canon EF-S 10-22mm or a Sigma 50mm f/1.4. You can always check the EXIF data and view them in full resolutions (5MP). Better still, make one as your wallpaper each day. Till then, take care and happy shooting and watching matches.

WordPress theme goes wider and bigger

I’m excited to announce another wave of updates for my dedicated photography blog! This time, there’s actually 2 updates to the theme.

Photo caption fix

First of all, it’s about a bug fix which is actually quite unnoticeable to the masses. There are 4 columns at the bottom of the homepage whereby 2 latest photos shown. The description of the photo has been made to be the same as what is displayed in the photo slide show / stream above. Primarily, we do not want to see “Click on the photo to see larger size” appears in the caption at the homepage which is ridiculously irrelevant, isn’t it? It’s only valid when user goes into the blog entry.

Secondly, it’s about serving better and wider range of photos.

Everything has gone wide these days seriously. You want wide wide highway to drive on to getting real big and wide screen display to play your HD videos. Heck, you can’t even buy a proper normal ratio (4:3 ratio with resolution like 1024×768, 800×600, 1280×1024) LCD panel on market as easily as 2 years ago now! Everything is wide, so do the photos and blogs. Okay, back to where we were.

For our case here, in particular, panorama. It’s a pain to the eyes when we are viewing something very wide like panorama like the scale of 5:1 (width:height). Just like the little long panoramic image that you are seeing above!

With just a click of button! Walah~

The blog entry content pane is widened to as much as the template permits. This has made photo viewing much much much more flexible and satisfying. Hope you all like this little update.

Technically, of course, for those who are interested to get wide too on their blog too, read on.

The idea is actually simple. I hide the sidebar and expand the content pane. Typically, most of the blogs run on two column template whereby the first is for the content and the second one is for the sidebar.

We will focus on the left (content) and the right (sidebar) column. Here’s one live example to demo on.

The left column has the id of “leftSample” and the sidebar on the right has the id of “rightSample“.

You may have noticed the absence of updates over the past few days. I have been busy juggling with work (and repairing myself from sudden mood swing on the personal note), taking care of mylensdb.com, and designing a new brand new site!

I would like to call it, HugoLim Photography. It resides at photo.hugolim.com.

It has been years having my photography works blogged at this site and I’m feeling the need to have a dedicated one instead of mixing them with the rest of unrelated stuff like computers and geek-like programming junks.

How things started

I’m captivated by CNN’s Daily Snapshot website. It updates daily and show the most interesting event happened on the day. I like this idea. Thus, I’m thinking of its concept used to present its pictures.

The design

photo.hugolim.com runs on WordPress as it’s backbone and not on dedicated photo gallery application.

However, there’s something real cool about this site (yes, pardon me for praising my own website). As you can see from the screen shot of photo.hugolim.com below, the placeholder of the biggest picture will change itself showing the latest pictures posted.

And for every one day or two, a new photo will be posted on this site.

And at the bottom of the page, we can see the latest posts with thumbnails of featured categories (eg, landscape, nature, travel and people).

With this, I proudly announce, photo.hugolim.com is open for business! I like it very much, it’s design is so much better than this blog (shame on me). I really hope that you like it too.

Model Shooting: Debil, Abby and Eileen

Well, I’m fortunate that Kelvin invited me for a model portrait shooting session last week. Finally I can somehow utilize my lenses that have since collecting dust (even inside the dry box!).

Introducing ~~Elaine~~ Eileen, Debil and Abby ~~Ebby~~. I had a very hard time trying to remember and pronounce their names properly especially Debil’s. And I think I got some of their names spelled wrongly here too. Please correct me if I’m wrong.

A day with William

Introducing Captain William Yeoh of USS Enterprise. He is almost the same age as my nephew and he is as playful as any other babies too. Cute!

Babies are cute but.. things will go out of control once they learn how to crawl and it gets worse once they start trying to stand up and walk.. (laugh out loud) Okay, back to the topic…

Last week, I spent some time at my friend’s house trying to shoot some baby pics. The result is not that satisfying though. There’s definitely lots more to learn before I can actually offer my service commercially. Anyway, it’s good to have more photography sessions. Practice makes perfect!

A very big ‘Thank you!’ to Jerrica for the photographing opportunity!

Mr and Mrs Low

Spice garden (Batu Ferringhi) isn’t just about its spices only. It serves as a major photo-shooting choice for many of local folks as well as those from outstation. I was *ahem* honored to be able to do a couple photo-shoot session with my colleague earlier last week. The result….

Shame to tell that this is my very first time covering couple photo shooting. There’s really lots to learn from this outing. Apart from being able to test my newly acquired reflector, I have learned a lot on how to coordinate the whole process. The next outing would be definitely better in photo quality, faster in shooting and setting-up and lighter in equipments carried.

Lots of thanks to Wendy for helping out in this photo shooting session. She fell sick one day after that due to dehydration. Some photos are taken by her too!

I’m delighted to present you the latest shots of my nephew, Lucas Lee. Compared to last few albums, this is the first time I’m utilizing my mini studio ‘kah chang‘ tools for the shooting with him. There are just, basically, a stand, a white umbrella and with my flashgun attached together. Enjoy the shots!

PS: I have the ‘urge’ to buy second flashgun! #_# Mama, please stop me.

Sungai Palas Boh Tea Field

This is the very first time I step my foot on Sungai Palas Boh tea plantation field. It was a chaotic moment squeezing through the traffic up the highland and into the tea field in the long weekend. Traveling from point A to B that usually takes a 10minutes becomes a good devastating 1 hour. But never mind, the scenery really pay off!

This is my first time I created HDR Panorama too. There’s actually 3 variations made in processing these HDR panoramic. Tell me which one you like. Personally I love the first in the collection.

Smokehouse, Cameron Highlands

Smokehouse Cameron Highlands (Click for flickr/bigger size) Taken using Canon 400D with Canon EF-S 10-22mm f/3.5-4.5 USM at 10mm. Post-processed using Digital Photo Professional and tone-maped using Photomatix 3 Pro.

Yes! You got it right! Smokehouse Cameron Highlands is a place where every photo bug must stop-by for a picture or two. We went there for a quick snap shots before going to get our much anticipated steamboats. Smokehouse is popular among photographers for its colonial English style buildings. See the picture itself and you will know why.

Apart from that, I got harsh treatment from the hotel when I walked in to check out the ambiance of the restaurant. Seconds after I got in, a lady says “Sorry this is for patrons only”. Without much thinking, I just walked off. Needless to waste my time on this.

Even if I do not have the intention to dine in there, the hotel shouldn’t treat its potential customers this way. No way. And hell no I will ever dine or stay in this hotel. This reviews speak itself.

It’s a breathtaking scenery that every visitor to Cameroon Highlands would never miss it. I have complied the panorama I took back in year 2004 and the one I took recently and wish to share with you all. Here you go…

Nothing much have changed after 4 years except that there’s a new recreational/resting hut in the middle of the field, which is actually good for us to chill while enjoying the great scenery.

There’s actually a few more tea plantation fields around Cameron Highlands. I’ll try to get to them on my next trip up there! Happy Holidays on this long weekend peeps!
