
Since it’s gone public on January 2009, we have come a long way to what we are today. Let’s do a bit of time tunneling on how it comes by, what we have done and have not so far.
We are tracking all 30 vehicle plate prefix in Malaysia as shown below.
By States/Territory
On December 2008, I got the idea of tracking plate numbers around the states in Malaysia. Everyday, we keep seeing new cars on the road with newer, newer and newer plate numbers but do not exactly feeling how fast the numbers actually jump every day. We see and forget.
Why track?
On how fast or slow a state’s plate number increases everyday would provides some implication on how good the territory/state is doing. Comparing it with another state’s number would give us an idea on how both states fare with each other in term of economy, population and many more than you can think of.
During economy slowdown, we can expect slowdown in the number of vehicle registered as many would tighten their belts saving for more important stuff and delay the plan of getting a new ride. Of course, when the economy booms, we can expect a increase in vehicle registrations.
How we do it?
It’s simple. We harvest vehicle number plates at specified time frame everyday from the Transportation department’s website, JPJ. That’s why we call it, simply, JPJStat.
Why we do it?
The official of course, has all the possible data they want and can do all sorts of analysis and statistics. But our idea here is to try to make these information readily available right at your fingertip!
What’s still lacking?
As discussed many times in the previous posts, we are still far from being perfect.
Ideally, you can get what you want with our data collected and not by only getting what we can provide. Right now there’s only two charts that you can see for each state.

Secondly, we have not fixed the algorithm to be used against number plates from the Sabah state. We are regretted for not fixing it after almost one year since the project’s inception.
Closing words
We will seriously look into fixing the algorithm first before developing the ‘dynamic’ graphing/statistics solution. That’s our promise for now.
