I would have forgotten when I last went to Pulau Tikus if there’s date printed on the photo. This time, I went with my company’s colleagues.

As usual, we booked for 3 hours for RM24. The journey to the island was quite a tough one as we were moving against the current. It took us a good 45 minutes to reach there but just a mere 27 minutes to get back from the island. I guess current does play a big role here.

The sea was on low tide that morning. And for this, we were able to land on the sandy area which made life a lot easier compared to the last time I went there. We had to land on the bumpy rocky area the last time around. It was definitely much more dangerous than landing on sandy area. Thank god.

As the tide is still low that time, we were able to explore around the island on foot. Juggling through the rocky terrain is what we mostly encountered as what we can see from the map on the left.

We even met some people who took boat to the island to chill and fish.

Surely a good experience kayak-ing there sometimes. Oh ya, after ‘conquering’ the island for the second time. I would like to give some tips if you are planning a trip there anytime soon!

Tips

Sunblock. Yes, definitely needed.
Sunglasses. If you are not OK with the strong blinding sunlight.
Waterproof container. For you to keep important stuff.
Sweet/candy are recommended.
Drinking water. Critical.
Complete set of spare clothes.
Vinegar. In case of jellyfish attack! (You can borrow from the kayak rental office)
And lastly, you may want to go on low tide. You will enjoy much better there and a lot safer.

Penang Floral Festival 2009

Photographers! This is the time again!

Yes! It’s now on again this year! Penang Floral Festival, added into the Penang calender, it’s now an annual festive event.

This year, the Botanical Garden brought in 3 trams powered by 1300cc eco-friendly engine capable of moving about 30 people at a time. It is learned that the trams would be used to bring visitors for a stroll circling the park for a good relaxed 15 minutes. As part of the effort to move people around better for the event, they are now commissioned to fetch people from designated car park to the event location.

In order to serve the increasing crowd to the festival, Tram ride is introduced to help transporting visitors from nearby carpark. The route served is from the car park near the exit of youth park to the entrance of Botanical Garden. Adults are charged 1 ringgit per ride and children can enjoy half the rate.

Surely there’s a lot to see and learn from the event. It’s not just about flowers, there’s also educational booths set up for the young (and adults too!) to learn more about mother nature! It’s now on from 31 May 2009 to 7 June 2009. Visit the official website for more information.

I’ll see if I can make myself free during the period, I’ll want to shoot more photos! It ain’t gonna be enough! Never! Hope you enjoy the photos I took.

Getaway!

Escape from the hustle bustle of the city for your weekend dinner with great view overlooking Balik Pulau (South-west of Penang island).

Seng, is the new boss operating the restaurant now. Few restaurant operators had rented this spot over the few years (partly due to high cost of rental or charging too expensive, I think).

My family has already know the boss before this as he operated at somewhere else before moving to this new spot.

What’s cooking?

Popular dishes from this restaurants include Seafood otak otak in Coconut shell and Tofu with Anchovy (ikan bilis) and vegetable. (see pic)

Where?

Look for Permandangan Indah Enterprise, it’s located at the top of the hill on the way up to Balik Pulau from Paya Terubong/Relau. Along the way up, you will see an ample space with some stalls where you can do some sight-seeing over looking Balik Pulau (See map for exact location)

Georgetown, Penang HDR

Located about 5 minutes further up the hill from the famous Chinese Temple Complex Kek Lok Si is the Air Itam Dam. The dam was built by the Penang City Council between 1958-1962. Today, besides supplying fresh water to Penangites, it’s a popular jogging/hiking trail for the locals.

From the dam, one can overlook to the city located north-east of the island, Georgetown which has been listed as World Cultural Heritage Site in 2008.

Technical note: Taken using Canon 400D and Canon EFS 10-22mm, EV2+- bracketing and processed using Photomatix.

Penang Starwalk 2008

Yes I did it again! One of the most important in the Penang calendar besides Penang Bridge Marathon is Star Walk. It’s much more relaxing than the bridge run as we need to only walk. This year, it took place at PISA. It’s basically a sub 2 hours stroll around the surrounding area including Sunshine Square, industrial area, snake temple, airport and the sports complex itself spanning total distance of 10km.

Along the way, I can see lots of interesting things from airplane to ‘graffiti’ work to the enormous crowd….

Even babies on trolley are fit to join the walk!

Ahem… may I get your attention please…

This is my latest panoramic masterpiece of my beloved Hugo Penang Island. It is taken using Canon 10-22mm at 10mm 1/250s F/10 handheld. :D

Yes, if you see it correctly, I took it from Prangin Mall’s carpark.

ahahaha.. yes yes… make no mistake.. I took this from carpark. In fact this is my second time doing so.

Here’s the first panorama taken at the very same spot few years back in 2004 using Nikon 5700 prosumer camera. :D

Balik Pulau

This is probably the best place you can find in Penang with lots of green, far away from the hustle bustle of the big city like Georgetown. Gosh, Balik Pulau just got its first traffic light about 2 years ago. See how traffic-free it is :D.

Geographically, it is located on the south west part of the Penang island. Most of the people here often commute to work at other places like in the industrial area in Bayan Lepas, at the south east part of the island.

These shots are taken at the top of the hill along Jalan Tun Sardon. This is the major link connecting Balik Pulau to the rest of the island.

HDR Kerachut Suspension Bridge

Its taken around 11am with Sigma 18-200mm at 18mm on three (3) separate exposures at -2,0, and +2. They are then processed using Photomatix. Notice that you can see flares at the top of the photo. It’s caused by my cheap UV filter bouncing light around back into the sensor. I should have removed the filter next time!

Or… get multi-coated UV Filter! :D

Kerachut beach (Penang National Park)

Briefly, Penang national Park is the latest and smallest National Park in Malaysia. It spans from Teluk Bahang to Pantai Acheh on the north west tip of the Penang island.
