Streamyx and splitter problem and tips

If you have experienced problems with your Streamyx before, you must be very familiar with the following lines when you called up the Streamyx helpline (1300 88 9515 / 100).

“Have you bypassed your splitter?”

“Have you disconnected your splitter and connect directly to your modem?”

Splitter splits the frequency band accordingly so that your phone and modem will not cross-over between each other and causing interruptions while in use.

The quality of your DSL (Internet) line can be determined by looking at the modem’s parameters, in particular, SNR margin.

Check your local and remote SNR margin. the higher the better. the ratings below is for local SNR margin.

30 and above = Good, u shouldnt have disconnections problems.

15 – 30 = Maybe a few when peak time, probably your line needs to be changed

15 and below = Very FREQUENT disconnections. You should consult telekom to have your line checked, most cases are because the line are too old and once they are changed they’re fine (the lines on the telephone poles). If you’re using a lightning surge protector. REMOVE it. they are known to weaken the signal by around 50-70% in order to prevent the surge on devices.

There’s ample of technical knowledge and assistance that you can obtain from Lowyat forum and I will leave you with that. I’m just sharing one simple yet highly effective trick that will almost instantly boost your line quality and who knows, you might just be able to fix your connection problems!

The trick is DO NOT CONNECT your modem through the splitter. This would reduce the resistance that signals need to overcome before reaching your modem. If you need to connect to your house phone, use a RJ11 double adapter like the one shown below instead.

Connect your modem directly from the adapter, then for your house phone, connect it through the splitter before plugging it into the adapter. It is just that easy.

Access blocked websites

Blocked from being viewing websites that you usually patron recently? That’s because your beloved country imposed a roadblock!

If your are using Malaysia’s most popular ISP, Streamyx in particular, this ISP imposes block by denying DNS request to those websites in their black-list. Others may imposes block using some other ways.

How’s a DNS works?

Simply… you will say “Hey, I want to get to KLCC (aka waawaa.com) ” and the taxi driver (aka DNS in our case) replies “Halo sir, I cannot bring you there, It’s blocked!!”

And the critical question, how to overcome this

Simple enough, ask for other taxi company (aka use other DNS service).

For instance, by Streamyx as an example, it provides DNS service jsut like any other ISPs usually do, too. But, we may choose to use other DNS whenever, wherever we want to. And for this we recommend you to use OpenDNS service.

Just like your normal ISP’s DNS service, OpenDNS provdes you the same service but at greater availability and speed, unblocked!

Streamyx – The Bandwidth test hoax

Your Streamyx line drives you crazy again when you try to access your much needed every day’s dose of perezhilton or gutterpost. Your connection speed has been this slow as ever and you decided to call up the infamous unfriendly Streamyx helpline hoping that they will at least, bother to issue a new complain report for you and hopefully, in the end of the day, they would cherish your browsing experience.

Of course, you will be asked to check your splitter, modem, this and that but I’ll skip that. You will be eventually asked to perform bandwidth speed test. They would instruct you to perform the test at their official website. Here’s how the result would look like normally.

I’m running on a 1.5Mbps line and getting 1312kbps (1.3Mbps), that’s pretty good and there’s really nothing to complain about. The helpdesk would argue that I’m getting reasonable fast speed and there’s no need to call them nor filing a complain! Case close? Hell no!

Making a bandwidth test is highly location dependent, you are actually testing by downloading and uploading file to a specific server which in the above case, you are “talking” to one of many Streamyx’s server in Kuala Lumpur. Of course, for a server that resides within Streamyx network, it will be un-amazingly fast.

There are many bandwidth speed testing websites but I’ll just stick to speedtest.net here, you can perform test with many servers across the globe, let’s start with the one in Penang.

Download speed at 1.31Mbps, not bad at all!

Thing is, you are surfing to servers that resides outside the country, mainly, from USA. Simply perform another test with server in USA and you will see why. Download speed stands at 0.14Mbps. Now you see something.

Talk nicely to the helpdesk guy, tell them your international browsing speed is horrible. Get them to check if you are getting a bad IP or something, anything!!!

TM Streamyx DNS haywire!

TMNet Streamyx users may be experiencing difficulty to surf the Internet despite getting connected properly with no apparent reason of why you can’t surf. You restart the modem, use different browser, turn off and on this and that and not to avail. Then, its probably TMNet DNS has gone haywire.

What the heck is DNS? It’s like I say I want to go to Tesco. So, DNS will tell me in order to get to Tesco, you need this address: 123, Jalan Abc.

That’s how it works, more or less, in Internet. You want to go to yahoo.com, DNS will give you the IP 68.180.206.184 to your browser to surf into. Simple!

Problem here is TMNet DNS gone kaboom and not too stable most of the times. So, here’s the solution! Use alternative DNS like Singtel, TIME Net, OpenDNS and many more!

How to change your DNS

For Windows XP:

Get to your Network Connection, pick your usual network adapter, right-click and choose properties!
Select TCP/IP, click properties, select use the following DNS server addresses, fill in any values below.
Click OK, wait for it to take effects. And you are ready to go!

You are furious when the infamous streamyx constantly disconnect you from their pool of service. You are desperate to get connected to the net to get your emails sent or something real urgent. What to do?

You can either hook up to your old dial-up snail-crawling service that you have years ago. What if you have none?

You can still hook your phone line into your old dusty modem RJ-11 port. Then… use either Time Net or Telekom’s 1315 service account.

Unrelevent interesting fact: Using dial-up to play online game has lower ping comparing to using BROADBAND streamyx. streamyx lags like shit, as always, indeed.

Speed Up your internet

I found one website giving DNS solutions. It offers DNS thats will provide faster DNS lookup, provides safe-surfing that tries to steal your personal information and can also trace simple typo error while you entered an address that is non-existence such as www.yahoo.con. it will redirect you automatically to www.yahoo.com instead.
