Hong Kong in brief

In Hong Kong, space comes at a premium. Hong Kong, as spectacular as you can see from the photo above, undoubtedly,  it claims the Vertical City title standing side by side with New York City.

Statistically, more than half of Hong Konger stay in public housing projects as they can’t afford the high living cost there.

Hong Kong’s 7 million inhabitants live at an average density of 70,000 people per square mile, which is equal to Manhattan’s. However, Hong Kong is a mountainous territory that primarily “piles” people – in the words of the exhibit notes – on one-quarter of its land and reserves about three-quarters for nature or agriculture, while three-quarters of New York City is built and one-quarter is open space or parkland.

Parts of Hong Kong have densities of 90,000 people per square mile, vertical density in the extreme.

Mongkok

Aerial view of Mongkok

Mongkok is where I stayed during my recent backpacking trip to Hong Kong. Here’s a little interesting fact about Hong Kong.

Mong Kok’s population density is extremely high, according to Guinness World Records, Mong Kok has the highest population density in the world (mean 130,000 per km2)and with a development multiple of four.

Camera shop in MongkokMongkok comes alive both day and night. During the daytime, all the business retail stores are open for business. Whereas during the night, we can get to visit popular street market like Ladies Market, Temple street, Flower market, Goldfish market and many more!

Shop at goldfish streetGetting a room to stay can be real tricky at times particularly during peak season. We can always try to book online first at hotelscombined.com. I managed to book mine at Dragon Hostel, Mongkok for 290HKD per night for two persons.

As I quoted above, Mongkok is really a crowd happening area, not only boosting the highest population density in the world, it is a district that never falls asleep. I do wonder if Hong Konger ever need sleep as traffic on the road is equally heavy and you can see people walking around the streets all the time!

Getting to know more about Balik Pulau by Arts-ed

I got a little flyer one day when I got back from work. It talks about Balik Pulau. History, map, attractions.

There’s lots of things to see and learn from the flyer itself and I’m impressed by the work of it.

I learned lots of new things about Balik Pulau from that I never knew before even though I was born and raised in this little town itself. I get to know that the roundabout that I drive around is once used to feed those thirsty horses commuting around the township many years ago. There’s lots to see and get impressed with the town heritage and culture!

Well, sorry that I forgot to scan the flyer and show you guys here. Just plain talk. But hey, they actually have a website and I think by know it has been gaining some popularity among the locals and international now. Check out the official website, http://www.arts-ed-penang.org/

myBalikPulau arts-ed

MyBalikpulau is one of two community-based heritage education programs organised by ARTS-ED. A similar project entitled Anak Anak Kota is conducted in the World Heritage Site of George Town.

Both heritage education programs are designed to help young people connect with their community and environmental heritage through the process of mapping and interpretation of local cultural assets.

The project uses non-formal and ‘creative arts initiatives’ to raise awareness of the meaning and significance of cultural heritage (agricultural, architecture, trades, crafts, customs, food etc) among young residents aged 11-20 living in the local community.

New operator

Seng, is the new boss operating the restaurant now. Few restaurant operators had rented this spot over the few years (partly due to high cost of rental or charging too expensive, I think).

My family has already know the boss before this as he operated at somewhere else before moving to this new spot.

What’s cooking?

Popular dishes from this restaurants include Seafood otak otak in Coconut shell and Tofu with Anchovy (ikan bilis) and vegetable. (see pic)

Where?

Look for Permandangan Indah Enterprise, it’s located at the top of the hill on the way up to Balik Pulau from Paya Terubong/Relau. Along the way up, you will see an ample space with some stalls where you can do some sight-seeing over looking Balik Pulau (See map for exact location)
For booking/ more info, you can call 012 5646858 (Seng)
